I have listed some advice below which may be of assistance in dealing with your particular hair loss or itchy scalp condition.

Hygiene

Afro hair often feels dry - which tends to encourage infrequent shampooing with the scalp sometimes suffering the consequences. Scalps play host to a natural yeast bacillus (Pityrosporon Ovale) which if not controlled can multiply extensively resulting in an irritated, inflammed scalp with secondary disease a possibility. Successfully cleansing afro scalp & hair is not quick and easy. This essential procedure requires an excessive rinsing regime.

Rinsing

Afro scalp & hair must be rinsed very thoroughly (laboriously). In order to remove all traces of detergent a rinsing time of up to 10 minutes should be adopted for persons with an average compliment hair. This would increase with longer thicker density of afro hair.
Where detergents are insufficiently rinsed away the afro scalp may suffer a contact reaction.
Symptoms may include: pruritis (irritation), erythema (inflammation) and the presence of scales (commonly known as 'dandruff'). There is no 'right' or 'wrong' answer to the question "How often should I shampoo?". You need to establish a routine that cleanses your scalp adequately.

Scalp diseases

Hygiene alone will not solve all hair/scalp problems. The following is a list of conditions that may present as scaly irritable scalp viz Eczema, Psoriasis, Pityriasis, Seborrhoiec Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis & Allergic Irritant Scalp Reactions.
If symptoms persist, professional advice should be sought. The StevensTrichology Practices offer advice and treatment (were appropriate) for afro hair loss & afro scalp conditions/diseases.

If we can be of any further assistance to you, please contact one of the helplines to the right of this page. You will be able to speak with a trichologist who will advise you accordingly. Consultations may be booked using this method. You can also e-mail your enquiry to:
