Alopecia Areata is a highly unpredictable autoimmune skin disease which causes scalp hair loss and in some cases the loss of body hair in part or totality. Alopecia Areata usually presents as small circumscribed patches which may multiply, expand or coalesce. Lesions may exhibit a characteristic stubble and pink or spongy skin. In severe cases this can result in total scalp hair loss (Alopecia Totalis) or total body hair loss (Alopecia Universalis). Alopecia Areata shows no affiliation to gender. Research suggests the disease may affect up to 2% of the population.

What are the Causes of Alopecia Areata?

Causes of Alopecia Areata - the breakdown of the autoimmune system, physical trauma which can vary in severity, injury or wounding, shock and in some cases severe fright, genetic factors may well be a factor as well as psychological stress.

Is there Treatment for Alopecia Areata?

Alopecia Areata in simple terms refers to a condition where the body attacks itself creating a barrier that prevents the hair follicle producing a consistent hair shaft. So the correct question would be is there a method of treatment that will prevent the body attacking itself?

The simple answer is yes by creating an effect that causes the body to react taking its thought process away from attacking itself, returning the hair production back to that of the norm. This is done by a variety of stimulation effects which cause a subtle aggravation to the skin. This is a tried and tested method that has been used throughout 46 years of practice. However, it should be noted that due to Alopecia Areata being so unpredictable, it is not possible to say that this method will always be effective.

Alopecia Areata hair loss may re grow spontaneously without the need for treatment. Even if this is the case, alopecia areata may well reoccur. Stress may be a factor.

Treating alopecia areata is advisable and in most cases beneficial. Alopecia Areata is not contagious. Symptoms can be similar to other diseases some of which may infect others - especially the young. Professional advice should be sought at the earliest opportunity.
