Cradle Cap

Cradle Cap (Vernix Caseosa) appears as a soft sebaceous like scalp covering in some babies during the the first few months of life. Cradle cap is a foetal barrier produced in late pregnancy, resulting from a combination of sebaceous & epidermal lipids, combined with desquamation of maturing foetal corneocytes. Cradle cap moisturises and waterproofs the skin and acts as a powerful natural wound healer.

Research suggests that Vernix may enhance wound healing in adults.

Cradle cap usually disappears within the first year. However if symptoms persist advice should be sought. Similarities to other such skin conditions may mask a more serious ailment.

If you would like to know more about cradle cap or any other skin condition, please contact our helpline (top left of page). You can speak with one of our trichologist's who will advise you.
