Propecia (Finasteride)

Propecia is a licensed treatment for Male Pattern Baldness or Androgenetic Alopecia. (See page on Androgenetic Alopecia for further information on this condition). Propecia is the only prescribed drug in the UK for male pattern baldness.

Male pattern Baldness is associated with the conversion of androgen testosterone into di-hydro-testosterone (DHT) by the 5 alpha reductase enzyme. Propecia blocks type II five alpha reductase enzymes reducing levels of hormones within the scalp which cause the follicular miniaturisation. This process may prevent further loss and encourage stability within the growth cycle.

It is suggested that in order to see results the patient should use propecia for 3-6 months. Clinical trials into the effectiveness of propecia are encouraging. Apparently, 66% showed increased hair growth, 30% showed moderate improvement, with 5% presenting a marked increase in hair shedding. In total 83% showed no further loss.

Side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, pruritis and swelling of lips and areasof face. Some have experienced pain within the testis. There is a small risk of impotency. Like many drugs, it is the unknown side effects that should be considered by all patients thinking about using propecia.

Women and children should not use propecia. Men should not take propecia with any other inhibiting agent (for benign prostatic hyperplasia).

Propecia is not available on the NHS hence a private prescription is required. If you would like to know more about propecia or where to obtain this medication please contact the London Clinic on 0207 404 0072.
