ShinglesShingles is an infections disease also known as "herpes zoster" which is caused by the chicken pox virus. After recovery as a child with chicken pox, the virus remains within the cells in an inactive state. Later in life it may reappear in the form of shingles. It should be noted that shingles would only affect those regions of the body that held the dormant virus. Why does the shingles virus activate? Activation of this virus can be due to a number of causes: certain medications, illnesses and stress. Aged people are more likely suffer from shingles due to a general weakened immune system. Those with a good strong immune system are not likely to suffer from shingles. What are the early symptoms of shingles? Early symptoms include: irritation, tingling and a sensation of burning. Note that a shingles infection will only affect one side of the body. When the virus reaches the skin blisters and a rash will appear and tend to be painful. The eyes may be affected. Severe pain may be a factor that requires medical attention. It would be advisable if you have such an infection you should seek medical advice from your GP. This infection tends to last for approx. a month however, it may continue for months or even years. What can be done to treat shingles? When discussing treatment for shingles ALWAYS consult your GP. They are best placed to deal with such a condition. It is always advisable to consult your GP in such cases to confirm diagnosis and get treated if required.
